Friday April 8 No Power

It was a 7.4 they say. Only a one meter tsunami, thank God. And only 4 reported deaths from elderly people who died of shock. But still no power here at base camp and therefore no water except in plastic bottles or jugs. In Sendai area no electric trains are running, a major highway is closed, gas stations almost immediately run out of gas, and traffic is horrendous on routes into or out of affected areas. Conditions too questionable for distribution runs. Unloaded 2 full loads of clothing, apples, etc. from the Osaka vans and sent everybody home except for us three long-term workers.

Helped the staff and CRASH team with earthquake related repairs around the camp. On the roof of the caretaker’s house the solar hot water heater was dislodged and about to fall off the roof. I helped the guys reposition it with ropes and stabilize it with cables.

Saturday pm Jeff Chapman and Hiro Hidaka arrived from Osaka with two more vanloads of relief food and supplies. We stored these with the rest in temporary storage in a room of the bathhouse which the camp was gracious enough to let us use. When done the room was ¾ full of supplies.
